Course Content:
The course is valued by students as the classes are small and the atmosphere is very friendly and supportive. The days are flavoured by many years of experience in practising and teaching Indian Head Massage in a variety of settings since Mary’s book The Art of Indian Head Massage was published in 2000.

During the three days we cover all the essential practical and theoretical knowledge necessary to offer a safe, effective and appropriate treatment to a wide range of clients. It is an invaluable addition to any therapies currently practised and an excellent treatment to take into the workplace.

The course teaches the European Approach to Indian Head Massage whilst offering learners an insight into the history and traditional techniques still practised in India today. Some new techniques have been added since I trained in Ayurveda in Goa in February 2011. You can read about my colourful experiences on this trip on my blog post about my trip to India.

During my courses, great emphasis us placed on self-care of the therapist and offer a supportive and friendly learning environment making each day fun as well as productive.

“I’ve had the most amazing three days with brilliant teaching and passion for the subject of Indian Head Massage. I have learned so much and have enjoyed every minute. Looking forward to doing my case studies and developing my routine and skills further.”

Topics covered include:

  • The history of Indian Head Massage,
  • Benefits and Contra-indications
  • Hygiene and Safety
  • Indian Head Massage techniques
  • Oils for Indian Head Massage
  • Stress Management
  • After-care advice
  • Self-Care for Therapist
  • Documentation including consultation forms and treatment records

Assessment is by written evidence of 10 treatments plus a practical demonstration of techniques and a written multiple choice paper.

Classes are kept to small numbers to ensure friendly and informative learning which is ideal for the more mature student or for those lacking the confidence to learn in a large group. There is on-going support following the course.

“The course is inspiring….we packed so much into three days.  I came away with confidence and enthusiasm. Highly recommended.”

“It was just wonderful. All so relaxed yet we learnt so much. I am already booked into two more of Mary’s courses.”

“What a wonderful three days. Mary is brilliantly thorough, but makes it fun and very supportive in the process.”

  • It’s always good to hear from other people before you decide to take a new course. So here are some of the comments from students who have attended a variety of different holistic therapy courses for beginners and trained therapists.

“Mary Atkinson has a great knowledge of Indian Head Massage and provides 1st rate Indian Head Massage training courses. Mary imparts all her knowledge in the courses she runs and adds enthusiasm to the subject. Mary gave us extra supporting material and puts a great deal of thought in preparation. ” William Andrews

“Mary Atkinson is a supportive, approachable, professional and enthusiastic tutor. I found her energy to be totally inspiring, on both a business and personal level. Her study days are always very well organised with lots of information, put together so you can take it away with you.” Jo Jowett

"I am pleased that I chose Mary’s Diploma in Indian Head Massage Course. Although the diploma is intense and you learn a lot, Mary has a way of making it easy and effortless to remember and understand. Doing the case studies was an enlightening process and wonderful learning for me.” Wendy Turner

“I cannot thank Mary enough for all her encouragement, support and help in getting me started. Each time I attend one of Mary’s courses or seminars I come away feeling that I had learnt some new skills that I can build on and enjoy using.” Lesley Brown

“I had a very interesting and fun day with Mary Atkinson looking at Adapting Indian Head Massage for the Elderly and Frail. It was a good revision day, and also gave us useful tips when working with very frail people. There was a good discussion about contra-indications, what was safe and not, and what we all felt comfortable with. We had some practice sessions too, and shared tips and techniques.” Sally Reynolds

    “
Mary’s relaxed but professional approach is a great environment to learn in. She makes you realise that massage is as pleasant to give as it is to receive!” Jo Colby-Relf

“Mary’s Indian Head Massage courses are excellent, and her expertise, enthusiasm and passion for Indian Head Massage is infectious. I passed the Diploma in Indian Head Massage earlier this year and have since attended Adapting Indian Head Massage for the Elderly and Frail. I hope she will continue to run more advanced Indian Head Massage training courses.” Annie Aulds

First rate teacher and therapist. Genuinely lovely, warm person who radiates positivity. I would recommend her highly and frequently do! Glad I travelled to Chichester and spent three wonderful days training to do her FHT approved Indian Head Massage course - when clients tell me that I do an amazing IHM, I tell them I had a good teacher! I now want to do Story Massage! Sue Adlam
