Self-Help for Anxiety

This simple routine can be a useful way of starting to overcome feelings of anxiety and restoring a sense of control over a stressful situation. It has proved to be among the most popular techniques from my book Healing Touch for Children. Many parents have used the technique themselves, and also taught it to their children.

The movements can be so discreet that no-one need know just how your child is managing to stay so calm and focussed. Encourage him/her to practise the sequence every day until it comes as second nature.

  1. Grip your right thumb between the palm and fingers of your left hand. Squeeze gently. Hold until you feel a pulse. Release.
  2. Move to your next finger and again squeeze gently until you feel a pulse.
  3. Repeat with all the fingers on your right hand.
  4. Repeat Step 1 on your left hand.
