Story Massage and Sunflowers in Chichester

Since beginning our Story Massage project, we have been quite overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and possibilities for Story Massage. We are so delighted by the way that participants on our training days embrace the concept and use their own expertise and experience to bring Story Massage into their work and lives.

We have been excited to hear about people taking Story Massage into schools and special schools, mother and toddler groups, hospices, charity events, foster and adoption organisations and, of course, the family home. Each training brings a new group of people with new ideas and positive feedback.

Creating a Story Massage

One of the highlights of our training days is tapping into our creativity to write new stories using the ten basic strokes from our eBook on Story Massage – Once upon a touch… story massage for children. Some massage stories are created for a particular child or person, others on a theme, or for an event. Despite some initial hesitation on occasions, it is always a wonderful surprise to feel the story begin to take shape and there are plenty of laughs along the way. Indeed, many people say they continue adding to the story for several days to come.

On a recent Story Massage session in Chichester, for example, two participants chose to work on a story about sunflowers growing in a field. Later, we received a beautifully illustrated powerpoint presentation so that we could share the story massage with others with a note:

This is to say thank you for a wonderful course. Having a positive group to bounce ideas off each other, made it extra special.  It was all so colourful, friendly and welcoming and it didn’t feel like a training session but a day catching up with friends, so thank-you.

Everyone who attends our courses has an option to receive the stories written by others on future courses (with the permission of the creator, of course). In this way, we hope to build up a library of new and original massage stories to help more children enjoy the many benefits of nurturing touch through story massage.
